Local Altrusans Shine at Conference

            The District Two Conference of Altrusa International Inc. was held April 24-27, 2008, in Richmond, Virginia.    District Two is composed of nineteen clubs in the states of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.  Each local club is dedicated to community service and the promotion of literacy.  Altrusa International, Inc. of Martinsville and Henry County had five members attending the conference: Hesta Anderson, Pat Featherstun, Martha Woody, Linda Dorr and Dianne Vann. The local club was recognized for its community service and promotion of literacy with more awards than any other club at the conference.   

-First Place - The Mamie L. Bass Service Award for its annual Phill-Up the Bus Project
-First Place -The Ann Ayer District Two Yearbook Award for the club’s yearbook
-First Place - The Irene Mardis District Two Newsletter Award for the club’s monthly newsletter

-First Place - The Patsy Flensborg Conference Exhibit Award for its display concerning the
  Phill-Up the Bus Project
-Second Place - Letha H. Brown/Betty S. Brooks Literacy Award for its support of reading nooks and literacy information located in the Emergency Waiting Room and the Outpatient Services Waiting Area  at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County
-Second Place - Edith W. Nelson Environmental Award for its development and maintenance of    a landscaping project at the SPCA
-Third Place - Mary S. Resh Program Award for excellence in monthly programs
-Melba C. Smith Distinguished Club Award
-Betty C. Swartz Presidential Excellence Award
-Emerging Leaders Award for Deborah Belcher, treasurer of the local club
-Governor's Workshop Participation Award for Clubs in Area V

In addition, Linda Dorr was installed as First Vice-Governor for District Two.  Linda led a well-attended Membership Development Workshop and Martha Woody was one of the facilitators of a workshop for officers.  Dianne Vann is the new Communications Chairperson for District Two.

The late Frances Milstead, a long time member of Altrusa International, Inc. of Martinsville and Henry County, was memorialized at the conference for many years of service to Altrusa and her dedication to its ideals.
